| Objective: To systematically evaluate the effect of Virtual Reality(VR) as an intervention for individuals with dementia. Methods: Randomized Controlled Trials studies (RCTs) concerning the intervention effect of VR on patients with dementia were retrieved from the electronic database of Cochrane Library、PubMed、 Web of Science、Embase、CINAHL、Medline、ProQuest、CNKI、WanFang Data、VIP and SinoMed from the establishment of the database to December 19,2023. Meta analysis was conducted by RevMan 5.4. Results: 16 studies involving 899 patients were included. The meta-analysis results showed that virtual reality technology was superior to the control group in scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Barthel Index, Quality of Life in Alzheimer"s Disease Scale (QoL-AD), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) (P < 0.05), but the differences in scores on the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions Questionnaire (EQOL-5D) and Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD) were not clear. Subgroup analysis showed that virtual reality technology as an intervention method using games had a more significant effect on improving patients" MMSE scores (P < 0.0001). Conclusions: Virtual reality technology is effective in improving cognitive function, depressive mood, daily living ability, and quality of life in elderly patients with cognitive disorders, and the intervention method based on games is superior to the task-based intervention method in improving cognitive function. Due to the limitations of the quality of the included studies, the above conclusions still need to be verified by more high-quality research. |
