| Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effect of productive engagement between subjective social isolation and negative attitudes toward robots among community-dwelling older adults, so as to provide references for developing interventions to alleviate older adults’ negative attitudes toward robots. Methods A total of 636 older adults were recruited from 7 communities in Hunan Province using the convenience sampling method. General information questionnaire, Negative Attitudes toward Robots Scale, Subjective Social Isolation Scale and Productive Engagement Scale were adopted for the investigation. Results The total scores of negative attitudes toward robots, subjective social isolation and productive engagement among the participants were (38.44±11.64), (17.08±4.13) and (40.24±10.32), respectively. Subjective social isolation was negatively correlated with productive engagement (r=-0.488,P<0.01) and positively correlated with negative attitudes toward robots (r=0.509, P<0.01). Productive engagement was negatively correlated with negative attitudes toward robots (r=-0.583,P<0.01). Productive engagement exerted a mediating effect between subjective social isolation and negative attitudes toward robots, with the mediating effect value of 0.170(95%CI:0.127~0.221,excluding 0), accounting for 46.4% of the total effect. Conclusion Productive engagement plays a partial mediating role between subjective social isolation and negative attitudes toward robots among community-dwelling older adults. Subjective social isolation can not only directly exacerbate older adults’ negative attitudes toward robots, but also indirectly elevate such negative attitudes by reducing their level of productive engagement. |
