Objective Adequate and quality sleep is essential for individuals’ physiological and psychological health. This study aimed to examine sleep health, sleep behaviors, and their associations of medical students. Methods A correlational design was used. 576 college students from one medical university in Shanghai were recruited using convenience sampling. Baseline survey, Insomnia Severity Index, Sleep Hygiene Index, and Bedtime Procrastination Scale were used to measure demographics and sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, sleep hygiene, and bedtime procrastination, respectively. Pearson correlation and hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed. Results Participant mean age was 21.6 years and 67.0% were females. Mean sleep duration was 7.2 hours and 51.2% had short sleep (<7 hours). 24.8% had severe insomnia symptoms. Controlling for the covariates, bedtime procrastination (β= -0.30,P <0.001) was a significant predictor of sleep duration. Similarly, bedtime procrastination (β=0.19,P<0.001) and sleep hygiene (β=0.28,P=0.001) were significant predictors of insomnia symptoms. Conclusion Short sleep and insomnia are common among medical students. Sleep behaviors, including sleep hygiene and sleep procrastination, are significant predictors of sleep health. In future practice, attention should be paid to medical students’ sleep and sleep-related education should be incorporated into the construction of campus culture.
